Interview with Songwriter –Jimmy Conn on The Shamoozey Show

Shamoozey: So Jimmy C, what possessed you to write a folk song?

JC : Well y’see Shamoozey, I was hanging out over at ezfolk.com and someone
suggested a folk song competition and I thought what a grand idea? So after thinking
about this for 20 minutes I came up with the song called Ezfolk Go Easy Folk. Part of the
reason is that the name had to be mentioned in the title of the song or theme, something like that.

Do you know, I wrote this song in 20 minutes and had it performed in about
an hour. If you listen you can hear it was just done off the cuff with no sweet harmony
of an orchestra backing. Just lil ol Jimmy Conn and his guitar.

Shamoozey: So Jimmy? Are songs hard to write?

JC: hmmmm, thats a great question Shamoozey! When I write a song its something
I might be feeling, may it be sad, happy or whatever emotions us mortal humans go through but
the point being to transpose that feeling into word and music, that’s the tricky part.

Here’s what I do and in no particular order, remember music creation is a mood and it
depends on the mood of the creator. Now, sometimes if you listen to your favorite song
but listen this time to see if you can hear the mood?  Yes, the mood of the artist, it might be a little
sigh or a feeling of joy, or even a feeling of ecstasy, Remember, sound studious can only go
so far to cover over these little idiosyncrasies and you can hear the mood of the musician, singer
or artist. I personally feel that some songs cannot be saved no matter how good the sound
man is. A bad song is a bad song.

Look, when I write a song, I try not to let it sag, I call this (sink artist go). This is a difficult
thing to achieve and the mindset has got to be just right.. I’ll be the first to admit that some of my
songs are complete crap and even I (as the pope used to say) cant stand to listen em myself. But the point I’m trying to make is
you need a chorus and about 3 verses and a bridge and most of the music has got to suit
the words. A good song imho should not drag or SAG you down.

Shamoozey: Do you have any recommendations you would like to share with other
songwriters and budding musicians.

JC: Most songs are structured in the same way with a verse chorus bridge and one
book I highly recommend to accomplish this is Superior Song Writing I liked
the bonuses that come with it too. It teaches you the basics of writing a good song and
its great especially for new songwriters.

Shamoozey: It was a pleasure talking with you again JC, will you come back and we’ll continue
this discussion?

JC: It was my pleasure Shamoozey and I would love to come back on your show and
continue this dialogue and who knows maybe someone will get something out of this and write a hit song.

And that’s all for today folks, stay tuned for updates on The Shamoozey Show and remember rebels

don’t let em get you down. — Shamoozey out!
